Rust - Open sometimes forgotten doors

Hello lovely followers and visitors, welcome to April!

As usual at the first of the month I want to share with you my work for the brand new challenge at Country View Challenges!

This month it is my turn to host the challenge and I thought the theme "RUST" would be fun. 

Vintage, old and rusted things are very common and I love this look.

There are many possibilities to create faux rust on your projects with different mediums and colors and even salt, vinegar and cinnamon are cheap and easy ways to get rust.

There are also paint systems, gathered together for perfect rust look and several good commercial rusting products on the market.

I want to show you some ways to get rust or a rusty look on your projects, so you easily can make your own rusty project.

1. Real rust and patina with vinegar and salt:
You can find a whole bunch of recipes for this way of creating rust. Next day I took them out and left them to react with oxygen.

 I tried it out with some metal pieces of my stash. I mixed water with salt and vinegar and put all metal pieces in there.

 I put it outside and left it over night.

Here you can see, how the metal reacts.

 I repeated the steps two more times and this is what I got:

Well, some of the pieces are rusted really good, some didn´t. I think, some are more suitable than others, so it is a bit of try and error.

2.  Rust with Acrylic paint and cinnamon:

This is a very easy but effective way to create rust. You only need acrylic paint in brown, maybe in 

yellow and turquoise or blue and white, some gilding wax or metallic acrylic paint and of course 

cinnamon.

Paint some corrugated cardstock (I teared it into pieces for my project), cardstock or whatever you want with brown heavy body acrylic paint.

Paint the whole surface with a generous layer of paint

Now sprinkle into the still wet paint cinnamon.

By dabbing gently over it, you make it stick to the surface.

You also can mix it with your brush at some places with your acrylic paint using your brush. You will get a nice texture!

You can repeat the process, until you are satisfied with the result.

Very easy to do - and it smells good! :-)

To give your rusted project the final touch, drybrush some blue/green/turquoise paint and metallic wax on top.

3. Rust with ironpowder and oxidation medium:
There are many kits, sets and mediums out there on the market. I didn´t try them out, so I can´t tell you, which one would be the best.
I used the rust effect set from LaBlanche. You can find a good instruction video here

Paint a gessoed surface with acrylic paint and add rust powder and/or patina effect powder.








Sprinkle the activator (different colors) on top and leave it over night. It needs time to react.

These are the first three possibilities to create rust. If you come baack the next days I´ll show you some more!

Layout "Art" - DT Project for ARTastic

Hello all, 

it´s the first of April and there is a new challenge at ARTastic!

For your inspiration there is a painting from Kenneth MacQueen - Wild Poppies.

If you want to know more about the artist, hop over to the blog, there you´ll find interesting informations!

Now to our challenge. You can use the picture as an inpiration, may be the watercoloring, maybe the shades of grey, the flowers - whatever you like.

The only requested criteria is:  POPS OF RED on your page

This is my take on the challenge:

I was inspired by the watercoloring. I took a photo from my stash, I wanted to use for ages. Now it was the perfect one for the challenge!

I glued paper stripes on a cardstock and painted the surface with white Gesso. Then I placed the photo and drew a face matching to the eye.

I fixed the pencil drawing with some fixative spray.

Now I took some of my ecoline liquid watercolors and painted the face. Then I matted the photo and glued it down.

I took some flower stamps from PaperArtsy, stamped them with Distress Ink in weathered wood and colored them with Pastel pencils. I wrote the word "Art" with a black water soluble pencil and activated it with some water.

 I shaded the edges with Distress Ink black soot.

I decided, to leave the layout as it is and didn´t use any embellishments.

Tim Holtz inspired Card - DT work for Country View Challenges

Hi all, I want to share my second project for the March Challenge "Inspired by Tim Holtz" over at Country View Challenges.

This time I took my inspiration from here.

I did the steps quite similar to Tim´s:

First I covered the entire surface with washi tape

Then I added distress paint.

Now I used the diecut the Sizzix Frameworks, I had in my stash from sometime ago. I colored it with DIs.

I went through my diecut-stash and took some of the insides to add.

now it was time to put my card together. I grabbed all I need, colored the edges of the papers and a scrap from a packaging of chocolates and glued everything down. I stamped a little sentiment at least and that´s it!

Travelling Art Journal, #1 - DT project for Canvas Corp Brands

Hello all, 

today I have some exciting  news for you! 

Some girls of the Canvas Corp Brands Creative Crew send Art Journals around the world! Every month we all make an entry into one Journal of our teamies and send it to the next girl. So after 12 months we will hold a unique, wonderful and inspiring art journal in our hands. It´s so very coooool, isn´t it?!

You´ll find more informations about the idea on the CCB blog here.

Well, now you know what´s going on, now to my first entry.

I´ve made a little art journal from watercolor paper, stitched it together and created the first pages.

The pages are ispired by the imagination, that my art journal here from my little village in Bavaria goes on it´s journey around the world!

Here are some steps:

 First I layered papers, canvas stripes and tissue followed by glimmer mists

(you can find all the goodies I used on the CCB blog)

 Next step was to use several stencils with white Gesso...

 ....followed by several Glimmer Glams and Glimmer Glazes. After this I did a lot of doodling with white and black posca pens.

 Now I drew the image on top and painted all. 

 Now I embellished my pages with one of the new Architextures, some shrinked flowers and did some stamping. At last I added a stamped sentiment and sealed everything with fixative.
